Random thought experiment about warfare I’ve been thinking about whether there might be a more realistic way of thinking about war than simply hoping humanity eventually decides that everyone should get along. 1. The warrior ideal First, there’s the idealized concept of the warrior. Obviously actual warfare has very often been nowhere near this ideal. War can involve atrocities, cruelty, conquest, exploitation, and people who simply enjoy violence. But the is interesting because it suggests that there can be , even though warfare itself is horrific. Imagine the idealized warrior fighting because there is something they love and feel responsible for protecting: their family, community, homeland, or resources their people need to survive. And ideally, they can recognize that the people they’re fighting have the same basic reason. “My family needs these resources. Their family needs them too.” A fallen enemy can therefore still be respected. Their family can still matter. Their death can still be mourned. The warrior isn’t fighting because killing is inherently good; they’re willing to face something terrible because they believe something they love needs protecting. Again, Reality has always fallen far short of it. But perhaps the existence of the ideal tells us something important: If humans are never going to completely stop having competing interests—territory, resources, security, strategic interests, etc.—then maybe we shouldn’t make the elimination of all conflict our only possible goal. What if instead we tried to put a The extreme thought experiment would be something like returning warfare to medieval technological levels. Obviously that wouldn’t make war humane. People would still die. Civilians would still suffer. Atrocities would still happen. Bad people would still exist. But there would be a much lower maximum scale of destruction. And technological progress could theoretically continue . A better catapult is still a catapult. A better bow is still a bow. The point isn’t to prevent technological improvement. It’s to prevent technological improvement from continually raising the maximum amount of destruction until warfare can threaten civilization itself. I’m not saying we should literally abandon modern technology and start using catapults. 😂 It’s an extreme example of the underlying principle: This is where the thought experiment gets particularly strange. Modern nuclear warfare has created a situation where a major war between nuclear powers carries the possibility of catastrophic escalation and potentially mutual destruction. So imagine, purely hypothetically, that we could remove that factor entirely. Not by convincing every country to stop having ambitions, but by creating a system where Then the argument isn’t only: “You should agree to this because it’s morally better.” It could also potentially be: That is where self-interest enters the thought experiment. If there are governments or movements that genuinely aren’t willing to abandon their territorial or strategic ambitions, perhaps a system that makes warfare could theoretically give even those actors a reason to consider accepting the restrictions. Not because they suddenly became peaceful. Not because they suddenly became altruistic. But because Of course, this creates a whole new set of problems: enforcement, cheating, technological loopholes, verification, and whether anyone would actually trust everyone else to follow the ceiling. So I’m absolutely It’s a thought experiment. The three ideas together are basically: Maybe the medieval-weapon example is completely impractical. But perhaps someone someday looks at the underlying idea and thinks: And That’s the part I find interesting enough to throw into the void.
