“What happens when someone inside one of the most iconic retail platforms of the last cycle sees its limits up close?” @kenzixbt speaks with @jayendra_jog , Co-Founder of @SeiNetwork , to trace the path that took him from the early days of Robinhood in Palo Alto — through [Spoken audio]: So Jay, I actually have a question about the background that you had before crypto. You were at Robinhood and that's a huge shift, right? So why did you start building in Web 3 in the first place? So my time at Robinhood, I would say, was pretty interesting. When I interviewed there to join, this was like back in 2017, it was two houses across the road from each other in Palo Alto. Like in one of the houses, they literally took the bedrooms and they had like standing desks over there for the engineering teams to work from. That's what it was like when I interviewed and I was there for a few years. So I saw everything play out. I saw it 10x. I saw the IPO happen. And I was also there when the GameStop saga went down with Robin Hood. So for anyone that might not remember, there were around a dozen meme stocks that retail was like getting super excited about. And basically, the price for these stocks was just going straight to the moon. And then one day out of the blue, Robinhood just turned off buys. And that was from, I mean, from someone that was trading from someone that was on Wall Street bets. From that viewpoint, it was just extremely surprising, like why would Robinhood do this? Because when you turn off buys, that effectively stops the price from going up higher. And it felt kind of just like there are two dudes in a room that are calling the shots. We're going to turn off buys to help traditional like these institutional players that are shorting the stock and I mean, honestly, that was infuriating. I think anyone that was on Wall Street bet to the time they were just extremely mad about that and as an insider like all of my friends were asking me questions around like yo, man what's happening like why is all this stuff going down and You're like it's you just feel so powerless when something like that It's going down because people are coming to you with questions and you don't really have anything to be telling them So that was actually the original inspiration. We wanted to build something like Robinhood, except build it on chain. That then led us down this entire journey where this was back in 2021, so we're like, okay, which chain should we build it on? And there wasn't really any chain that was performant enough to support that. So then we're like, okay, let's go ahead and build our own layer one to support that. Ultimately, that's turned into what is now say, So say it's the first paralyzed EVM and yeah, I mean we went live with the paralyzed EVM earlier this year and since then the traction has just been up into the right.

“Virtual machines are like cities — once they reach critical mass, they become magnets that are incredibly hard to displace.” @dikshaarden catches up with @jayendra_jog , Co-Founder of @SeiNetwork , to unpack this idea at a deeper level — why systems with flaws can still dominate [Spoken audio]: Before we start, I'm actually going to read out a tweet that you did and then we are going to ask you a question around that because it was actually very interesting and I have to look at my notes here. So you said virtual machines are like cities. Once a city like NYC gets big enough, it's like a magnet. Even if it has significant issues, people move there by default. Newer cities can get a lot of growth, but unless there's something revolutionary, the new cities are unlikely to displace the oddries. Very cool. So why do you believe in this statement at a macro level, like forget blockchain, forget web 3, why did you say this? Yeah, yeah. So I mean, the reason I said it was tied to virtual machines on chain, But I think fundamentally, like, I've spent time living in cities like New York, San Francisco, and it continues to kind of confuse me why so many people want to live in places like that. Because there's all these, like, structural things that are wrong with these cities, like, in the case of, like, SF, for example, there's a ton of problems with, like, safety, there's a lot of, like, homelessness. In New York as well, I think that there's a lot of, like, things tied to, for example, congestion, like, there's crowds everywhere. And I kind of thought a little bit more deeply about it. Why don't these cities get displaced? There's all these newer cities that are getting more and more investments. Why don't people just move there instead? Fundamentally, it's because these old cities, they're like magnets. That's where all the activity is happening. That's where everyone already is. It's really difficult to get someone else to basically go to a new city instead of one of those older cities. I noticed that trend. I think it's definitely true for crypto as well. Once you have a virtual machine, like the EVM. Once there's enough mind-share around that, it's really difficult to displace it.
