Payments Canada Jana Mackintosh of UK Finance Interview. #qnt #quant #uk #ukfinance #tokenizeddeposits #gbtd #overledger [Spoken audio]: Actual physical use cases they're seeing the value that those are bringing. Yes. Yes. Very important kind of questions when we started doing the work We chose use cases that can help us really test the technology People the platform you don't quite know still exploring it So you want to make sure that you kind of run something over the platform That's going to test all the different new functionalities that we build into it So about across both retail and wholesale we then kind of looked at you know, which which, which workflows, which customer kind of use cases really will help us test that. So we identified three use cases that we're working on at the moment. One is around person-to-person payments, very much kind of linked to the previous conversation we heard around fraud, APB fraud in particular, really, really big problem for us in the UK. Because as your volumes on real-time systems kind of grow, we start using those systems of things that we've not anticipated, fraudsters start exploiting that. The fraud and ABP fraud for us is kind of like growing alongside the growth and that real-time value transaction. So for us kind of like thinking about person-to-person payments where we can kind of provide customers with great confidence that there is an ability for you to better manage, protect, prevent the fraud and the technology allows us to do that. So that's a really, that's a key use case for us. If we can unlock that and we can really start focusing on prevention and really stop focusing just on reimbursement. You not only kind of like save a lot of heartache, a lot of difficult customer experiences, which is life-changing and heartbreaking, you can actually kind of improve operational efficiencies. So person-to-person payments and retail really helped us kind of unlock and kind of think about some of the kind of issues around fraud. The other one that we looked at was mortgage transactions. Again, the technology allows you to really kind of simplify very complicated transactions. The mortgage transaction is fairly complicated. It's a very painful thing for anyone to live through. So the use case that we explored there is really to kind of help simplify those workflows, make sure that there's greater transparency in terms of what flows with the payment, greater control, again, ABB fraud, people get scammed into misdirecting their payments. You get greater control in the way that you can write smart contracts to do program and put conditions around execution at certain times. And that kind of gives you a better control over the whole end-to-end journey. That whole workflow can be simplified, quite substantially in this use case. And it's not about the speed of the payment per se, but it is about the kind of simplification and the speed of the entire journey. And then the last use case that we put on the platform is a bond. So it's tokenizing a bond. Many of you in the market in the room will also kind of consider what tokenization in the whole sales base looks like. We know that's a leading application of this technology. And that's the asset side. What we want to do is we want to bring the payment side on chain as well, so that you can have the payment side and the asset side all on chain, unlocking real benefits in terms of operational efficiencies, liquidity, and the whole sales space. So those are the ones that we've tested. But I will say we've looked at about hundreds of use cases. And the platform can do any of them. So there's a real question around what the members, what the industry, want to use the technology for, and then kind of like applying that onto the platform, so. And as your members go through, that you know, the hundreds of use cases, and I think it's easy to start to imagine the variety of them there. In your mind, are they prioritizing speed, security, are they, are the regulatory, regulatory, so they, like the conversation you had with the smart contract, the ability to govern the entire flow, How are they prioritizing which of those to sort of identify which use cases are more viable? Or is it just purely, you know, the revenue stream based on the consumer up behavior? It's a little bit of all of it. I think the one thing about new digital money and assets is there's a commercial aspect of it. There has to be. There has to be incentives for anyone to innovate. It's just a really kind of solid foundation to kind of grow from. So there are commercial benefits that we do explore. So in places those commercial benefits can be unlocking kind of new revenue pools. We do see that in some of the use cases that they want to pursue. Some of the use cases are more strategic. So it's another thing that kind of like drives this, whether it's a defensive play and that they feel like certain use cases are better served or maybe served by stable coins, which means that deposits and money will flow out of the financial services sector, out of their balance sheets and to someone else's balance sheet. So there is a strategic consideration to the use of tokenized deposits. And then there are some regulatory aspects to this as well. The regulators, the SRT's, government wants to see us innovate. We have an incredibly important role to play in payment to enable that innovation. It's not necessarily for us to innovate, but we have to be able to unlock the benefits of innovation that other people want to put onto the market. And that's what you see, for example, in the UK, the government issuing a digital guilt. So we've said, well, that's fantastic, right? So if you're gonna tokenize kind of a government bond, we'd love to kind of bring the kind of pain inside of that into the equation. And then you can really kind of like streamline the whole transaction. So all sorts of different kind of drivers that we're looking at. Very exciting. So, and I appreciate you taking the time to join us from abroad and your insight. Tokenized deposits are certainly gaining traction here, Kenneth. Is there one thing that you would share with the audience to think about as, you know, where you are on your journey and where we're heading? I think the one thing that really resonates with me on this whole project and the kind of program that we've been running is that it is competitive, which is difficult in payments. Payments is always more collaborative. We want to collaborate, we want to do it all together, we want to kind of move together. And there's great benefit in that when you think about reachability and when you think about adoption migrations, everything that we need to kind of like consider. But in this kind of like particular topic, what I'd say is, do develop a competitive mindset. If we enable these platforms to exist and to be fully interoperable with the existing kind of real-time rails and other kind of capabilities that we do have, it's for the industry to decide what you wanna do with the platform. That's why we're not dictating these cases. We use cases that we're testing the platform for, but what the industry wanna do with the platform is entirely driven by them. It's your business case, it's your customers, it's your kind of like decision in terms of what you want to use the capability for. And that kind of puts you in a very different mind space where you need to understand it, you need to unlock it, you need to really understand what you want to use it for. It's not regulatory driven. It's not regulatory driven. It's driven by the industry. Excellent. Well, thank you very much. We're out of time. I do feel a bit remiss we didn't say the word AI a bunch of times, so AI, AI, AI. Just to make sure we're part of the club. Let me make sure we're good. But thank you very much for joining us today. We really appreciate you traveling over and joining us. Thank you very much
