Codex tip: Tell Sol to use threads that use Luna Max instead of using subagents

A screenshot of an AI chat interface shows a user asking "can your subagents be Luna models?" and the AI responding "No," listing only GPT-5.6 variants (gpt-5.6-sol and gpt-5.6-terra) as available subagent models. This contradicts the accompanying tip suggesting Luna can be used via subagents, as the image confirms Luna is not available as a subagent model.

I understand there's a lot of desire to get Luna used as a sub agent. I do not recommend messing with your model catalog to force capabilities that are not natively exposed. Multi agents v2 requires proactive inter agent communication, which only Sol and Terra do well.

A tweet by @eidzoku (verified) advises users to manually edit their `~/.codex/models_cache.json` to change Luna's "multi_agent_version" to "v2" in order to force-enable Luna as a Codex subagent, claiming it's "dirt cheap" and faster than Terra. This directly contradicts the accompanying post's warning against hacking the model catalog to enable capabilities Luna isn't designed for, since Multi-Agent V2 requires proactive inter-agent communication that only Sol and Terra properly support.

SITUATION EXPLAINED: GPT-5.6 prices dropped 80%, partly because the model optimized its own inference stack. • Luna fell from $1 / $6 to $0.20 per million input tokens and $1.20 output, an 80% cut • Terra fell 20%, from $2.50 / $15 to $2 and $12, Sol's pricing is unchanged •
