GPT-5.6 Sol and Luna are ahead of Terra at every point on the Intelligence vs Cost per Task chart. GPT-5.6 Luna stands out as a particularly cost efficient model Charting the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index shows the trade-off between intelligence and Cost per

A scatter plot titled "Intelligence vs. Cost per Intelligence Index Task" mapping various OpenAI models (GPT-5.6 Sol, GPT-5.6 Terra, GPT-5.6 Luna, and GPT-5.5) along an x-axis showing Cost per Task in USD (log scale from $0.04 to $1) and a y-axis showing the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index (ranging from about 30 to 60). GPT-5.6 Luna (green) appears as the most cost-efficient option at lower price points, while GPT-5.6 Sol (red) achieves the highest intelligence scores at higher costs, with a green "Most attractive quadrant" highlighting the upper-left region where high intelligence meets low cost.

Been running my own benchmarks. Luna is indeed better than Terra.

The image is a scatter plot titled "Intelligence vs. Cost per Intelligence Index Task," comparing OpenAI's GPT-5.6 variants (Sol, Terra, Luna) and GPT-5.5 on cost (USD, log scale) versus Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index. Luna models consistently appear in the green "most attractive quadrant," offering high intelligence (up to ~51) at lower costs than Terra and Sol variants, visually supporting the claim that Luna outperforms Terra on efficiency.

Damn, should've also let Sol posttrain* the Terra, not just the Luna, from the looks of it. *i mean, run the existing launch script with the existing config.

The image is a scatter plot titled "Intelligence vs. Cost per Intelligence Index Task" comparing OpenAI's GPT-5.6 model family (Sol, Terra, Luna, and baseline GPT-5.5) across intelligence index scores and cost per task. The plot shows that GPT-5.6 Sol (red) achieves the highest intelligence scores (up to ~58) but at higher costs, while GPT-5.6 Luna (green) offers better cost-efficiency in the "most attractive quadrant" (top-left), and GPT-5.5 (gray) sits in the middle as a baseline.

The post's point relates to the chart: the author observes that "Sol posttraining" (running the existing training script on the existing config) seems to have boosted intelligence significantly across the board, and regrets not applying the same posttraining to the Terra model as well, since Terra's posttrained variant ("Terra (high)" ~55) outperforms the other Terra variants but falls short

【Smart Ways to Use Codex】 - Unless you need Terra Ultra-level performance, use Luna XHigh /Max - Don't use anything below Sol High; use Luna's XHigh/Max instead - Don't use Sol XHigh; use Terra Max instead - Use Sol Max only for the most critical tasks In short, Luna

The image is a cost-performance scatter plot titled "Artificial Analysis Coding Agent Index v1.1," comparing AI coding models (GPT-5.6 Luna, Terra, Sol, Claude Fable 5, Claude Opus 4.8, Gemini 3.1 Pro Preview) across API cost (USD) and Index score, with performance tiers ranging from "Low" to "XHigh."

The chart visually supports the post's advice by showing that GPT-5.6 Luna's XHigh/Max tiers offer high index scores (75-78) at significantly lower costs than competing models, while Sol Max sits far to the right at ~$2,800—reinforcing the recommendation to avoid expensive Sol tiers unless absolutely necessary.

don't fall for the bait to use gpt 5.6 luna because the benchmarks show its performance is "pareto optimal" it may perform similarly over a one shot assessment, but luna, terra, and sol are dramatically different in the output tokens and agent steps needed to finish the task

RIP Terra

The chart "Intelligence vs. Cost per Intelligence Index Task" compares OpenAI's GPT-5.6 model variants (Sol, Terra, Luna) on a weighted cost vs. Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, where GPT-5.6 Luna dominates the "most attractive quadrant" with higher intelligence at lower costs, illustrating why the pricier Terra variant is being discontinued ("RIP Terra").
