"Their stated timeline aimed for Stage 1 in 2023 and Stage 2 in 2024." -Grok laughing at the @Coinbase "on-chain" centralized dataBase. Is Base decentralized? Answer Base, an Ethereum Layer 2 (L2) network developed by Coinbase, is not fully decentralized at this stage, but it is designed with a roadmap toward progressive decentralization. Currently, Base operates as a Stage 0 rollup, meaning it relies on a centralized sequencer controlled by Coinbase to process and batch transactions before submitting them to the Ethereum mainnet. This setup allows Coinbase to have significant control over the network, including the ability to influence transaction ordering or, in theory, censor transactions if compelled by external forces like regulatory pressure. Additionally, the smart contracts governing Base are managed through a multisig (multi-signature) wallet, which is overseen by Coinbase, further centralizing authority in the hands of a single corporation.
