WILD: AI models may have helped spot a NEW planet 116 light-years from Earth. A product manager with no telescope used Claude Code and Codex to scan NASA data on 126,000+ stars. The AI flagged a star whose brightness dips every 3.18 days. The same dips appeared in data from

2026 will avoid the distinction of the least active Atlantic hurricane season. As of 5 am ET Saturday, Accumulated Cyclone Energy (ACE), a metric that includes storm strength and longevity, stood at 18. While this is only 17% of normal for the date, other years were less active.

The image is a line chart titled "Current Season North Atlantic Ocean ACE (1991-2020 Climatology)" tracking Accumulated Cyclone Energy (ACE) from January through December, with an observed value of 18 marked on October 9th—far below the climatological average curve that climbs to roughly 120 by year's end. This visual supports the post's point that 2026 ranks among the least active Atlantic hurricane seasons on record, showing observed ACE at just 17% of normal for the date.

ELI5: how does canning work?? I recently watched a video where a woman put a bunch of raw chicken into mason jars and put them in her canner (some kind of huge crockpot looking thing). I simply cannot wrap my mind around the idea that you can “can” something that would usually be bad in about a week in the fridge, but because it is “canned”, it can be shelf stable, out of the fridge, for years. I know this is a practice that has been around for ages. My father grew up canning food. I just want to understand the science behind it. How does it not go bad? Is this because it is airtight? Help me understand!!

From Long Island's ospreys to royal terns and egrets on the NC coast and waterfowl along the Atlantic Flyway, millions of birds are heading south, connecting ecosystems across continents. This #WorldMigratoryBirdDay, we're grateful to the partners safeguarding their habitat.

From one star to an entire galaxy The idea of building Dyson spheres around multiple stars is fascinating. Project Sphere is taking that vision further, one star system at a time. The journey to a Type III civilization starts with one step. Excited to see how far this vision
