· 2026-10-08T08:13:28.571000+00:00Why does a "solid" 30% return actually work out to just 6.8% a year? A CAGR calculator explains. Time to answer a question that trips up a lot of return comparisons: why don't two "30% returns" mean the same thing? A 30% return sounds like a great outcome until you find out it took 4 years to get there. Run it through a CAGR calculator and that same 30% becomes 6.8% a year, which is the number that actually lets a European investor compare it against anything else they hold. The two formulas, and why they disagree. Simple ROI just measures the total percentage change from start to finish: an investment of €2,000 that grows to €2,600 has returned 30%, full stop. The problem is it says nothing about how long that took. A 30% return over 2 years is a very different result from the same 30% over 10, and simple ROI can't tell them apart. CAGR restates the same total as an average yearly rate instead, which is what makes it possible to compare two investments of completely different lengths on equal footing.
