I calculated that I will be comfortable with 4% withdrawals per year. So my plan is to have 2 years of expenses in money market fund at Vanguard - this is just to use it in case market goes down and I don’t deplete my investments. Then I will put the rest in something like Vanguard Balanced fund or Lifestrategy 60/40. So, my plan is to look at the balance on Jan 1st of each year and determine how the investments performed the previous year. If let’s say my balance is up 7% I can safely withdraw higher than the 4% and maybe do a Europe trip that year. If the market is down, I will pull from the money market. If I don’t have any big spending plans that year I just stick with the 4%. I would do this lump sum into my savings account once a year. Does this sound reasonable and what other strategies work for you?
