I tried to time the market on many names mainly tech and energy and came up with 30% gains this year. While SMH, AIS ETFs returned 90-100%. If I would have went all in, into those ETFs my net worth would be double what it is now. I'm fortunate to of had access to Finviz stock screener early in my investing starting and it gives me access to the whole stock market and it seems that even I can't beat ETFs returns. The problem with investing into individual stocks is you don't know how much to allocate and when the sector corrects some names never come back. ex: (WDC,STX,KLIC) (KTOS)(CAT) and you are left with dead bags.
