However, as I try to buy Euro based ETFs I'm told that US residents are restricted from opening positions on them. I'm a fairly unsophisticated investor, so hoping someone has done this and can give some advice on what I can buy in Euro. (Current US resident, but former EU/UK resident and hoping to return). Edit: the end note was intended to make it clear that exchanging currencies is not optimal as there would be losses and the long term plan is for the proceeds to be in euros.
