: Asteroid Psyche 16 has been found to contain gold reserves worth $700 quintillion. That's enough to make everyone on Earth billionaires.

An illustration of the asteroid Psyche 16 floating in space, representing the claim that it contains gold reserves worth $700 quintillion—enough to theoretically make every person on Earth a billionaire.

TIL about the “shadow biosphere” hypothesis: the idea that completely unknown life forms exist alongside us on Earth, using fundamentally different chemistry that might make them unrecognizable as life to us

At the Nobel Peace Prize lecture Al Gore gave on December 10, 2007, he warned us that the Arctic could be “ice free” by the end of summer 2014. That didn’t happen. Oops. And this year’s September Arctic sea ice extent (SIE) five-day minimum of 4.60 million km² on September 12th

This figure shows September Arctic sea-ice extent anomalies and pause probabilities from CMIP5 model simulations under historical and three RCP scenarios (RCP2.6, RCP4.5, RCP8.5) through 2100. Panel **a** displays the declining sea-ice extent anomalies (reaching ~ -6 million km² by 2100 under RCP8.5), panel **b** shows the rising probability of a 7-year pause in decline (peaking near 0.48 under RCP2.6), and panel **c** plots pause probability versus pause length, with the historical baseline crossing the p=0.05 significance threshold near 20 years.

The image relates to the accompanying post by providing scientific context that undermines Al Gore's 2007 prediction of an ice-free Arctic by 2014—the model data shows substantial natural variability and frequent multi-year "pauses" in the sea-ice decline, meaning a single year's extent (like 2014's

It's kinda funny how Falcon Heavy's triple core landing is getting way more attention than the lunar lander it's launching.

The image displays details for "Griffin Mission One," a SpaceX Falcon Heavy launch from LC-39A at Kennedy Space Center scheduled for NET December 2026, with badges for LZ-40, LZ-2, and ASOG landing zones. The three landing zone badges directly relate to the post's joke, as they highlight the triple-core booster recovery capability that overshadows the actual Griffin lunar lander payload being delivered to the Moon.

I’ve never seen these before but apparently they are an actual thing. Throw them into a small fire and on contact they release a fine spray of fire retardant shutting down the flames. Limited use for small fires.
