Looks harmless… until you realize what a powerful MRI magnet can do to metal.

Biosecurity is too important for security theater. In a quick test with Raygun, we found that DeepMind's SynthIDBio watermark signal could be washed out while preserving the predicted structure. We don’t think protein sequence watermarks buy much biosecurity.

The image shows a 3D protein structure with a red-and-white checkered "Raygun" watermark pattern overlaid on dashed "Watermark" boundary lines, visually illustrating how DeepMind's SynthIDBio protein watermark signal (the checkered pattern) could be washed out while still preserving the underlying predicted protein fold. The diagram accompanies a post arguing that protein sequence watermarks offer little real biosecurity benefit, as the watermark can be stripped away without compromising the protein's predicted structure.

Congrats to Nicholas Moskovitz and his team at @LowellObs for winning the @PlanetarySociety STEP Grant to help track near-Earth asteroid hazards. Glad to see Arizonans are doing important work in space science.

Btw, the main idea was the observation that most distributions over ATCG can be well approximated by those in the manufacturer's catalogue -- distributions with equal probabilities (ex 33% A, 33% C, 33% G). 1/3

A diagram illustrating a phylogenetic tree model fitting process, showing two DNA sequences being aligned, analyzed with a 'Fit tree model' step, and then discretized to produce a tree visualization with sequence logos.

Continuing my weekend explorations in spatial data visualization: Deep Space Missions. Space exploration often reaches us as separate facts: a launch date, a planetary flyby, a historic image, or a spacecraft’s final transmission. What excites me about data visualization is the
