I’ve been reading FIRE posts for about two years now trying to get my head around it, and am now looking for some thoughts/advice on making a plan for myself. About me: I’m quite frugal, so I already save a large portion of my income, but I am not particularly financially literate/do not have financially literate people in my life to ask questions to. My current state is not great. So, I figured I would get things sorted now and start moving towards FI. I live with family so monthly expenses are averaging around 1500 per month (I travel a lot because I am in a long distance relationship). - 160k cash in a regular savings account getting basically 0% interest (I get a few dollars lol) - 95k in Traditional 401(k). To many, it carries almost a mythical stigma that scares a lot of people or instantly sparks some innate form of judgement against the person accused of it. Whatever nepotism may or may not be, all I will say is it's incredibly prevalent in finance. How do i know that? Well my Patagonia laden friends, I know that because I'm a product of it. Without getting too specific, I have family at the executive level of a large North American bulge bracket. My first summer in between my freshman and sophomore years I was approached by said family member, and they asked if I wanted to work at X Bank. Obviously I said yes and I had an 'interview' for a banking role which was more of a coffee chat than anything. I've seen people ask if Nepos interview. The honest truth is we do but the questions asked are equivalent to 'what do you do for fun'. One time I was asked specifically what team I wanted to work in lol.
