This week felt like a controlled experiment on what actually moves gold. Monday: hopes of an Iran peace deal get rebuffed, oil jumps, and gold… falls 3.1% to a two-month low (silver -4.6%). The market read expensive oil as sticky inflation, which means higher odds the Fed hikes again. Tuesday: no peace news at all, but US job openings fell and consumer confidence hit a 12-year low. Gold bounced 1.4%, because weak data trims rate-hike bets. So in both directions, the driver was the Fed, not the war. With the 10-year at 5.25% and gold paying no yield, the opportunity cost argument seems to be beating the fear trade. Gold is now ~25% below January's record near $5,600 after its worst quarter in over a decade.
