i backtested 75 crypto trading strategies against just holding the same coins, 2017 to 2025. 8 came out ahead, none by more than luck would explain this is the crypto slice of a bigger project testing trading strategies against buy and hold. data is from binance, mid 2017 to march 2025, daily and hourly depending on the strategy, on BTC and a basket of the bigger alts. trading costs of about 0.1% a side get charged on every trade. the benchmark is just holding the same coins over the same period. what got tested: trend following (MA crosses, donchian breakouts), mean reversion, volatility breakouts, momentum across coins, funding rate / carry trades, a few ML classifiers, calendar stuff like the weekend effect and turn of the month, and a batch of the setups that do the rounds on crypto twitter and youtube (pivot bounces, VWMA crosses and so on).
