Umbrel Home became unstable after adding external storage and now often won’t POST. Looking for hardware troubleshooting advice ((BETA 2.0) right before all this happened.) I’m trying to diagnose an older Umbrel Home with an Intel N100, 16 GB RAM, and a 1 TB internal NVMe drive. It originally booted and worked normally. The trouble started after I connected a 2 TB external SSD for Bitcoin node data. The external drive began disconnecting or unexpectedly unmounting, and the machine became progressively less stable after that. Here is the full timeline and list of symptoms: The external SSD repeatedly disconnected or unmounted. Bitcoin installation and startup began failing. umbrel.local periodically became unreachable. Ethernet stopped establishing a usable connection. Wi-Fi worked manually but would not reconnect automatically after reboot. NetworkManager showed wlo1 disconnected with no saved Wi-Fi profile. Umbrel reported my network as connected and authenticated, but trying to save the same copied Wi-Fi password through the Umbrel service returned TRPCClientError: Incorrect password. USB devices began intermittently disappearing or failing to initialize. Linux reported USB error -71 and “unable to enumerate USB device.” The keyboard would work during one boot but receive no power or initialization during another. The monitor began flickering and displaying green corruption and duplicated text. The machine sometimes required multiple complete power disconnections before it would produce video. The front light would remain on while the monitor stayed black and the keyboard remained inactive. I then tried reinstalling UmbrelOS. First, I booted the older umbrel-usb-reflasher. It loaded Debian 11 but produced USB enumeration errors, a kernel page fault/Oops, and severe green display corruption. Next, I downloaded and flashed the newer umbrelos-amd64-usb-installer.iso. The installer detected the Umbrel Home and began automatically flashing the internal storage, but it failed after writing approximately 5.1 GB with: xz: /umbrelos-amd64.img.xz: Compressed data is corrupt After that incomplete installation, booting from the internal NVMe produced errors including: EXT4-fs error EXT4 checksum and directory errors Bad message (os error 74) unable to mount config partition Errors involving /dev/nvme0n1p4 A kernel panic followed by an automatic reboot I understand that the failed installer likely left the internal operating system incomplete, but the machine is also failing before it reaches the operating system. I was intermittently able to enter the AMI BIOS by repeatedly pressing Delete. The BIOS version is Umbrel_U130121_V1, dated December 23, 2023. BIOS itself eventually froze and the display went black. This happened with both the USB installer and external SSD disconnected. I also cleared CMOS using the battery-disconnect method: Disconnected power and every peripheral. Disconnected the CMOS battery. Held the power button to discharge residual power. Waited approximately 10 minutes. Reconnected the battery. Tried a minimal boot using only the original power adapter and HDMI. The CMOS reset did not help. The system still produced no monitor output and did not initialize or illuminate the keyboard. I did not short any motherboard pads or attempt to flash the BIOS. At this point, the symptoms appear to go beyond a corrupt UmbrelOS installation. The BIOS freezing, inconsistent POST behavior, USB initialization failures, video corruption, and black-screen boots make me suspect one of the following: Motherboard or onboard-memory failure BIOS/firmware corruption Internal NVMe failure Power-delivery problem USB controller or chipset failure I’ve already ordered a newer Umbrel Home N150 with 2 TB of internal storage so I won’t need external storage in the critical path. I would still like to diagnose and repair this older unit properly. Has anyone experienced similar behavior with an Umbrel Home? Is there an official or known-safe BIOS recovery procedure for this exact model? Would replacing or removing the internal NVMe be a useful next diagnostic step, or do the BIOS freezes and lack of POST point more strongly toward a motherboard or power issue? I’m especially interested in any safe tests I can perform without blindly flashing firmware or risking further damage.
