Is iOS Shortcuts good enough for collecting historical crypto data for backtests? I’m experimenting with a mobile-first research setup and wanted to get some opinions from people who work with historical market data. I’ve been using iOS Shortcuts to request crypto OHLCV history from public APIs and save it in batches. By repeating the requests and stitching the results together, I can build 6+ months of historical data without needing to be at my computer. The Shortcut is only being used as the collection layer. The actual backtest happens separately. What I’m trying to determine is whether this approach is technically sound as long as the final dataset is validated properly. My assumption is that if: the source API is the same, the timestamps are correct, there are no missing or duplicate candles, the batches connect correctly, and the raw responses are preserved, then it shouldn’t really matter whether the requests were made from Python, a server, or an iPhone Shortcut. But I’m wondering if I’m missing something. Are there any issues with using Shortcuts for this kind of historical collection that could make the data unreliable even if the final OHLCV looks complete? For example: silent request failures, pagination mistakes, rate-limit behavior, API-side data changes, timezone handling, or other edge cases that aren’t obvious from simply looking at the candles. I’m mainly using this for isolated strategy research while I’m away from my computer. Would you consider this a reasonable lightweight way to build a backtest dataset, or is there a point where this workflow becomes too fragile to trust? I’m looking for reasons the method could fail, not validation that it’s a good idea.

The accompanying "holy coal" comment likely plays on the rapid price spike visible in the chart—evoking the sudden, fiery surge of the stock, ironically fitting for a Tesla product tease.

Let me share my take on this. First, on "what the essence of this game is." I think we need to start by looking at what you're actually doing in it. Even within the crypto space, building products, collecting trading fees, long-term holding of an asset, or chasing hot coins for
