Giving someone bitcoin also means letting them sell it If I give someone bitcoin, I'd want them to feel free to sell it the next day. I might hope they keep it, but asking them every few months whether they still have it would make the gift awkward. They agreed to accept some BTC. They didn't agree to follow my investment plans. I'd ask whether they want it before buying it for them, especially if they've never used Bitcoin. If they do, they should choose how to receive it. With a wallet they control, I'd let them handle the recovery phrase privately and have them check the payment in their own wallet. I can explain what they're doing if they ask. Setting everything up myself and keeping the backup would leave them depending on me whenever they need access. And if choosing a wallet sounds like more effort than they want to spend on a present, I'd get them something else.
