A few things I check before trusting a project. What do you check before you trust a project? Two takes I keep seeing about the Coldcard mess: "this is why you go open source" and "see, open source doesn't help either." Both miss it. The firmware source was public the whole five years that bug sat there. Being able to read code is not the same as someone having read it. Auditable is a property of a repo. Audited is a property of somebody's budget and attention span, and it expires the moment the next commit lands. If you think that's a small-vendor problem: Dirty COW lived in the Linux kernel for nine years, on the most reviewed codebase on earth. Heartbleed sat in OpenSSL for two. And the XZ backdoor wasn't caught by an audit or a fuzzer, it was caught because one engineer got annoyed that SSH logins were half a second slower than usual. That's the real state of "many eyes make all bugs shallow."
