Hey r/Bitcoin I wanted to share some thoughts on the recent Coldcard incident and how it made me rethink the hardware-wallet seed generation. what is Coldcard? It is basically a popular bitcoin-only hardware walled made by Coinkite which is a Toronto-based company. It's been widely recommended in the btc community for its security features. many users trusted it as one of the safest ways to store btc long term. what actually happened with Coldcard? from what I have read, the older Coldcard design mainly depended on one hardware random number generator (TRNG) inside the device. that could be secure but the problem was that a software change in 2021 caused the device to use a weaker random-number process instead.
