BTC Custody Solution: MIC Like many others, I’m sickened by the losses people have incurred through no fault of their own. For years in Bitcoin, it was an A or B option for having Bitcoin exposure: exchanges or HW wallet(s). This fatal flaw in ColdCard’s code hopefully is the last of its kind, but I highly doubt it. The solution to wanting exposure to Bitcoin but not trusting an exchange or yourself with a simple (or complex) HW wallet is actually already on the market. This solution is multi-institution custody. In this setup, three companies are responsible for your private keys, but none can act alone to move your Bitcoin, as it requires two of three companies (in different jurisdictions) to move Bitcoin, and this move requires video/ID verification by the legal owner of the Bitcoin. Twice. Think of this as “institutional grade multi-sig” (some of the best companies in the business I might add who’ve been around for a long time). Importantly, there’s no multi-sig setup required by the owner, this occurs in the background. Imagine for a moment that you’re a gold bug. Are you going to have all of your gold in a vault in your home? You of course could, but at what dollar amount would you no longer feel comfortable? $100,000? $1,000,000? Somewhere in between? I see holding Bitcoin on a device in your drawer at home as no different, as a material allocation of Bitcoin on a device(s) will eventually become challenging to justify. Now, for the hard core maxis, I understand and completely accept that single sig, multi-sig can and should continue. But ask yourself-how many people realistically are going to finally “see the light” and get BTC exposure in cold storage? Will your uncle? Your grandma? Likely not. MIC endorses the ethos of “not your keys not your coins” because only you have the authority and authorization to move your Bitcoin. Collusion between companies you ask? Highly doubtful. It would mark the literal end of those said companies. The people that work at these companies are themselves hard core bitcoiners. It’s been said there is no perfect solution to Bitcoin storage, but IMHO, there is no better solution than multi-institution custody.
The only thing we’re intentionally holding back is everything related to issuing legal, real-world stocks for Solana projects. We’re waiting for all the legal work to be fully in place before taking that next step.
