People that used a STRONG BIP-39 passphrase (« 25th word ») are NOT affected by the cold card vulnerability After reading Coinkite’s security advisory, it seems that an important point is being overlooked. The vulnerability reduced the entropy of seeds generated on affected firmware versions. However, if your wallet was protected by a strong, unique BIP-39 passphrase (often called the “25th word”), the attacker would still have to brute-force that passphrase even after recovering the seed. In other words, from what Coinkite itself explains, the recent thefts appear to have affected wallets that relied only on the seed, without a sufficiently strong BIP-39 passphrase. A strong passphrase provides an independent layer of security that this entropy bug does not bypass.
