[Spoken audio]: The case for space data centers begins with changing which bottlenecks matter. On Earth, AI infrastructure runs on power interconnection delays, cooling needs, landfights, water use, and grid politics. In orbit, some of those constraints weaken. A satellite in the right sun synchronous orbit can collect solar power almost continuously. And orbital solar panels could be far more productive than those on Earth because they avoid weather, light, and atmosphere losses. But the strongest argument is for space-native computing. Satellites already generate enormous amounts of data, especially for Earth observation. If raw data has to be sent down to Earth before it becomes useful, bandwidth and latency become bottlenecks. Processing data in orbit means sending back conclusions, alerts or compressed products instead of everything. And that's why early products like HPE's Spaceborne Computer 2 matter. They show that useful edge computing can happen in space, even if it's nowhere near the hyperscale cloud yet. But the cons are brutal. removes water cooling but it does not remove heat. Without air waste heat must be redirected away through large fragile surfaces. Hardware is hard to repair, radiation can corrupt memory, launch costs are still decisive and orbital debris makes every large constellation a governance problem. ESA estimates that there are already 40,000 tracked objects in orbit and many more too small to track reliably. The ASIN study found that space data centers may reduce environmental impact but that's only if launch systems become dramatically cleaner. So, the real answer is narrow. Space data centers make sense first for space-generated data and resilient archives. General-purpose orbital AI factories are still a long bet.
