“Crypto is really kind of like a laboratory for lots of disciplines to experiment in.” @Tim_Roughgarden on what makes blockchains uniquely useful for research: “If you study financial markets and you have an idea to make Wall Street better, that’s going to be pretty hard to [Spoken audio]: One of the most fascinating things about working in the whole crypto industry is the game theory pieces of the economics. What also is unique is now you have this rich data set because you have actual people who are training on the blockchain and you have even forums that are public on how people are trying to make coups and everyone's like hold or all these different things that you can study. And now when you add AI into the question, you can just run these computational proofs or you can run different theories at a larger scale using crypto and cryptocurrency and actually start testing them. Are there any experiments that you're particularly excited about or anything you personally tested that it shows this interesting game theory dynamic when it comes to like crypto economics? I love that in that question, you highlighted this broader point, which has always been, I think one of the really exciting parts of doing research in this field, which is really kind of like a laboratory for lots of disciplines to be able to experiment in with a sort of transparency and like you say, the availability of the data, there's a bit of a wild west to it, which is then really cool. So for example, if you study financial markets and you have an idea to make like Wall Street better, like that's gonna be a pretty hard to even like kind of experiment with, right? But if you have an idea for a new kind of decentralized finance and you defy protocol, go ahead and deploy it, right? No one's sort of stopping you. And so I think that's true in finance and you see definitely experimentation with new financial instruments coming out first in crypto and then possibly moving back into the real world, like perpetual futures, this kind of thing. You see it with mechanism design. So, you know, one of the things I did that kind of got me into the blockchain space is Ethereum changed the way they did transaction pricing about five years ago. They had this upgrade called EIP 1559. Which actually- Yeah, there were some co-authors on it, right? So I authored the first economic analysis of it. Yeah, yeah. So Vitalik Buterin and some collaborators came up with the proposed mechanism and then I provided the economic analysis of that mechanism. And one thing that's cool about that is it exactly takes advantage of what you're saying is that you can see what happened in the past. So the price moves up and down depending on the winners of the previous auctions that happened in previous blocks. So the fact that it's publicly visible what happened previously directly provides feedback into and to sort of how to do the transaction pricing. So that's again, it was sort of a mechanism that had never been tried before and relatively new public blockchain protocol was that was a perfect place to try it. You know, governance, same thing. It's pretty hard to start a new country and like experiment with some different way of governance, but you can totally have a new, you know, DAO on a blockchain and sort of experiment with that. So when I try to get other researchers kind of interested, like people are like, oh, why should I work on the stuff? Why is it interesting? Like often one of my big pitches is you can try out ideas in the wilds that you would never be able to in kind of a more traditional application domain, right? So it's really a fun laboratory for all us researchers to experiment with.

The Future of Ownership Is Being Tokenized. Ask someone what blockchain is used for, and crypto is usually the first answer. But a bigger shift is happening quietly in the background, and it has little to do with coins. Tokenization allows real world assets like real estate,

Update on the benchmark of the Plutarch implementation of programmable tokens of CIP-113 vs the Aiken implementation: "Before this work" represents the implementation pre-Van Rossem.

A table titled "Upper limits within the mainnet budget — us vs Aiken" compares projected transaction-scale maxima for the Plutarch implementation (both "before this work" at 227 mem inputs and "now" at 658 mem inputs) versus Aiken's implementation across four dimensions (Inputs, Outputs, Tokens, and Policies), showing Plutarch's advantage ranging from 1.4× to 22× over Aiken.
