The Neo hand has 22 degrees of freedom on the fingers on the palm plus three on the wrist. It is tendon driven, meaning that there's actual motors on the forearm that are pulling little strings that make the fingers move exactly the way that your real human hand works. There is this saying in anatomy and robotics to talk about the complexity of a hand. It's basically 420, meaning there are four muscles on your upper arm, there are 20 muscles in your forearm. And it is those 20 muscles in your forearm that allow you to move your fingers in so many different ways with so much precision and have so much dexterity. And what the Neo hand can do is really, really crazy. It pours tea, zips jackets, and it even sorts grapes without squishing them. And there is a really cool trick in the drive ratio. Most Robin hands run 100 to one gear boxes, basically meaning that they're very strong when they press, but they can't really feel the feedback that the objects they're trying to squeeze is given. The Neo hand runs a five to one gear ratio, which makes it back drivable, meaning that when you press an object, you're not only pressing, but you're also sensing the pushback that the object gives on the fingers. So instead of just acting on the world and trying to process the feedback via visual input, this hand gives new ability to sense the world by measuring how different objects react to pressure and being able to reason accordingly.
