Lightning Labs built a toolkit that lets AI agents pay in Bitcoin autonomously — no credit card, no human in the loop. Here's how it works. There's a question nobody in the AI industry has properly answered: how do AI agents pay for things? Credit cards require human identity. Banks require passports. None of that works for software making thousands of micropayments per hour autonomously. Lightning Labs released lightning-agent-tools in February 2026, seven composable modules that give AI agents everything they need to operate natively on Lightning. The core of it is L402 plus lnget: an AI agent hits an API, the server responds with HTTP 402 "Payment Required" plus a Lightning invoice, lnget automatically pays the invoice, receives a macaroon credential, retries the request. Total time under one second. Total human involvement: zero.
