After months of tracking Nano's npm surge, the trail leads to MoonPay's ecosystem — and the fingerprints go back to PayPal's 2020 crypto launch To my fellow Nanners, For the past year I've been tracking the unusual growth in downloads of the nanocurrency npm package. I can now lay out what I've found: who is pulling it, since when, alongside which other chains, and where the institutional trail leads. TL;DR: One single CI pipeline — not organic developer interest — accounts for essentially 100% of nanocurrency downloads. That pipeline has been running Bitcoin infrastructure since PayPal's crypto launch in 2020, prototyped Nano in spring 2021, and put Nano back into production on July 21, 2025. Meanwhile, Nano now has a full protocol implementation inside MoonPay's Open Wallet Standard — merged by a MoonPay engineer in April 2026 — a project whose contributors include PayPal and the TON Foundation.
