June CPI dropped and markets loved it, but read past the headline. Headline came in at 3.5% YoY, well below the 3.8% forecast. Markets liked it - BTC up nearly 4%, stocks rallied, rate hike bets dropped. But look at what drove it. Energy fell 5.7% in a single month, largely because of a temporary Middle East ceasefire that loosened oil supply constraints. That ceasefire has since broken down and oil is already climbing back. Strip that out and core CPI was flat month-over-month, sitting at 2.6% annually. Moving in the right direction, but not dramatically, and still above the Fed's 2% target. The Fed chair said it plainly the same day the data dropped: "There might be some that look at this morning's data and say 'mission accomplished.' That is not my view."
