A note before you read. This is not a typical Wealth paper. My research normally moves through a long production cycle before release. This piece is an accelerated response, written and released within hours of the story erupting across X on July 13, 2026. And of crypto briefings July 14 report that the CIA's general counsel has described Bitcoin as a tool for intelligence gathering. I have waited three years for this conversation to arrive. Sources and notes are listed at the end. In 2023, I published an analysis that most of this industry refused to touch. In it, I asked directly, what's the NSA's role in this? Do they have a hand in creating Bitcoin? I cited economist Martin Armstrong's hypothesis that Bitcoin could serve as a government-created instrument for monitoring and taxing all transactions. I had already gone on record with columnist Jessica Grant of the Stockdork on May 24th, 2022, revising my once bullish stance on Bitcoin's having cycle. My original sub-stack has since been taken down after my account was compromised, but the trail exists. The published citations, the Twitter record, and the readers who followed my work at the time can attest to every word. I was not chasing a conspiracy. I was following the paper trail, and the paper trail starts inside the NSA itself. In 1996, more than a decade before the Bitcoin White Paper, the NSA published a research paper titled How to Make a Mint, The Cryptography of Anonymous Electronic Cash. In it, agency cryptologists set out the cryptographic requirements of anonymous electronic cash. privacy for users, protection against double-spending, protection against denial of service. 13 years after that paper, the Bitcoin white paper appeared, and Bitcoin relies for its proof of work and for transaction and block hashing on SHA256, a hash function designed by the NSA and released through NIST in 2001. The agency mapped the requirements more than a decade early. The agency designed one of the locks at its core. And then a founder with no face, no fortune touched and no history appeared, delivered the product and vanished in a way no ordinary human being ever manages to vanish. I asked in 2023 whether the obvious conclusion was the correct one. Yesterday, the question erupted across X, and this time the intelligence community's own words are doing the answering. The confirmation, as reported by Crypto Briefing on July 14th, 2026, hours after the story lit up X. CIA general counsel Joshua Simmons has described Bitcoin as a tool for intelligence gathering. Last year, CIA deputy director Michael Ellis said the quiet part on the record. People may have thought Bitcoin was anonymous, but I'd say it's pseudonymous. It's not truly anonymous. He confirms the agency works with law enforcement to track crypto payments, and he described Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies as another tool in the toolbox, one the agency uses to collect more intelligence, to gather more information, on adversaries, and to disrupt them. As far back as 2021, a former acting CIA director co-authored an analysis praising blockchain analytics as highly effective in combating illicit finance.
