@RealCoinGeek

Ever wondered what a day in the life of a technology reporter looks like? Join CoinGeek’s @ClaireCeldran at Philippine Blockchain Week as she takes you behind the scenes of covering one of the country’s biggest blockchain and emerging technology events. From deep-diving into [Spoken audio]: Come with me as I cover Philippine Blockchain Week for the fifth year in a row. We have three back days ahead and we at Queen Geek are curious to see what's changed and what stayed the same. This year's event is taking over two floors at the SMX over the weekend, but day one is all happening on the main floor. Walking in the first thing I see, founders and familiar faces saying hello and catching up. It always feels a bit like a reunion. The day kicked off with a message from a Philippine senator about his blockchain the budget bill, which basically uses blockchain to make government spending more transparent. I thought that was a pretty strong way to open the conference. The first panel was about trust and accountability, with speakers from the Blockchain Council of the Philippines and the Department of Budget and Management, definitely a sign that the government use cases are front and center this year. After that, I caught up with an undersecretary from the Department of Information and communications technology who shared some of the blockchain projects they're already working on. I also spoke with the Securities and Exchange Commissioner and one thing he said really stuck with me. He said five years ago the SEC thought blockchain was a scam. Now they're building frameworks around it. And honestly that was one of my biggest takeaways from day one. The overall tone this year feels very government focused. It gives us the impression that blockchain adoption isn't some future concept. It's actually being explored and implemented across different parts of government to date. Lunchtime came and usually the stage goes quiet around then, but this year, they had entertainment going on, which I thought was a really nice touch. Fun fact, I ended up sharing a table with the president of Lieberland, who's speaking on day two, thought that was pretty cool. After lunch, I went booth hopping to see what's new this year. Naturally, the biggest crowds were booths with the best giveaways. The usual suspects were there too, payment gateways, wallets, and infrastructure providers. One company even had Pokemon cards laid out to get people to stop by and sign up. Honestly, it was pretty effective. Everyone's here for different reasons. You've got hardcore crypto users wanting to know what's new, startup founders looking to network, and every now and then you run into old colleagues. And this is Andre, our social media guy who's been running around with me all day capturing content for Koen Geeks platforms. Safe to say, we both hit our step goals by now. To end the day, I had to prep for the panel I'm moderating on Day 2, banking the next billion. Really relevant in the Philippine context, considering millions of Filipinos still remain unbanked or underserved. Here's a sneak peek of that panel. As you can see, strong roster of speakers here with me. We've got representatives from coins.ph, Maxi Ventures, Multibank, and SmashPay. To know more, check out coingeek.com for my article on this. So that's it for day one at Philippine Blockchain Week. Time to recharge, because we've got two more action packed days ahead.
