$70 Mining Board Takes Down $4000 Professional AI Gear? Run 20B Large Models Locally, Max Privacy and Permanently Free Recently dug up a ridiculously low-cost solution AMD BC250 mining single board, onboard 16GB GDDR6 VRAM Used to be just $70, now around $200 Directly [Spoken audio]: Today I'm going to talk a little bit more about running local AI models on these AMD BC 250 computers This is my little test one over here. It's running Ubuntu server and right now I'm running olama, and I'm running the GPT OSS 20b model now up here We can see our memory and we're using most of our available nearly 15 gigabytes Then going back to our other screen. This is some of my testing now Now we already know there are awesome cases for these, these can be really good mid-range gaming PCs, they're really capable for being an entire computer on a little card, especially with the upcoming RAM shortages and GPU issues, these things are going to be going up, up, up in value. So when it comes to running AI, what are we getting here? These have 16 gigs of GDDR6 RAM, so that's more than something like a 3060 which has 12GB, even a 4080 has 16GB of GDDR6X RAM, so that is a little bit faster than these, but these were 70 bucks a few weeks ago, even now that they're creeping up close to $200, it's still a really good value. For testing I've been using two different models, Quen 2.5 7 billion parameter is just shy of 5GB, so this can do way more than that. The other one I just mentioned GPT OSS 20 billion is 13GB. So let's do a prompt here. Tell me all about light-based optical computing and it's going to do some thinking first off and then it's actually going to give me its response. So it's able to generate basically as fast as I can read, which is pretty awesome for a sub-$200 computer. That is crazy. And I know that not everybody is going to be into this kind of text-based interface that's really boring. So what else we can do is is go to any other computer or device on your network and run this very familiar looking web-based interface. Now this is running locally off of that Olama instance. We can see that I have those two models I just mentioned. And let's do a simple prompt. Tell me a joke in pseudo code, which it's outputting right now. It thought two minutes and this is what it thought. It put plenty of thought into it. Let's see what kind of joke it came up with. All right, Halloween versus Christmas. 31 in octal base eight is equal to 25 in decimal base 10. So that means that October 31st equals December 25th. It's literally true. So it wrote this little function. And then it said, when you run holiday confusion, you get merry Christmas even though it's October 31st because in code 31 octal is 25 decimal. Wow. And much like using the big boys, it even has some follow up questions you can do. And if I want to switch models, it's as easy as going up here and just choosing the other one and then doing a new prompt or starting a new chat. So let's ask Quinn, who created you? It's giving us the answer. It was created by Alibaba Cloud, specifically Quinn, one of their large language models. So that's pretty cool. So these are pretty incredible for running local AI inference on models from 7 billion up to 20 billion parameters. The fact that they have 16 gigs of GDDR6 RAM, which is even more than a 3060 GPU and it's on par with the 4080 GPU RAM-wise, not overall processing, but just RAM-wise. When these cards were $70 each, I mean, that's a crazy, crazy, crazy good deal. Even though they're creeping up to like $200, there's still a really good value. Next up for my project, I'm gonna get multiple of these up and running. Anywhere from like five to 12 nodes at once, Then I'm going to have a main kind of controller node that's going to act as the chairman in my AI council. That way I'll be able to do one prompt, it'll send out those prompts to a variety of different local models, get responses, cross-check them and output one superior response.
