Don't confuse "possession" with "ownership." In today's world, they are not at all the same. Bitcoin changes this. [Spoken audio]: Here is the confusion at the center of the ordinary life. We mistake possession for ownership. Possession is having a thing in hand, using it, enjoying it, feeling that it is ours. Ownership is something stricter. Ownership is the guarantee that no one else can take the thing away without our consent. Possession asks only whether you hold it now. Ownership asks whether anyone else can decide that you don't. They feel identical for years at a time, but they are not the same thing at all. The difference is easy to miss because the two so often travel together. You possess your home and, in a real sense, own it. But the test of ownership is never how it feels while everything is calm. It is what happens at the moment someone on the other side says, no, you don't own it. If your claim survives that moment, well, it was ownership. If it evaporates, it was permission all along and you were simply never told. This matters more than it seems because a life can be built entirely on permission and it can feel from the inside exactly like a life built on ownership. The security is real until it isn't. The freedom seems real until the terms change. If what you own can be taken back, you do not own it. You're a tenet who has forgotten there's a landlord. And the particular cruelty of this arrangement is that you learn the truth at the worst possible time, not in the calm when you could have planned around it, but at the instant of revocation, when the decision has already been made, and the only means left to you is a measly phone call.
