How can a startup accelerator that doesn’t take equity survive? @SuperteamUSA is betting on social capital, alignment, and the value of relationships. Here’s my take on what it means and why it made me say “I want in!” [Spoken audio]: All right, I know you've seen this claim this commercial that Superteam USA wants you but they don't want equity Accelerating founders for free and I know you're thinking how is this gonna work? How do they expect to earn any kind of return to keep their business going if they don't take equity? And I know I'm the new guy on the team but I want to give you my perspective because this is a big influence on my decision to join Superteam USA because It seems to me to be a problem that if I believe in a startup, if I believe in a founder and I help them in exchange for equity, that the only way for me to realize value from it is to sell it, to sell it to somebody else for more than I paid for it. And it seems a great shame that we don't have a more robust way for somebody to align incentives with the people who come behind him. That's not very aligned with the founder, with the product, with the team's success. It's not in alignment with the people who will hold the token after me because I don't have any incentive anymore to keep creating value now that they've paid me. What I like about this model is that it says social capital is more valuable than monetary capital. What is social capital? It's that know me, like me, trust me factor. If you had $10 million, you could do some damage. But if you had 10 million people that knew you, liked you, trusted you enough to feed you dinner if you were hungry, or introduce you to a new bank, or say a good word about you if you moved into their neighborhood, if you have that somebody who will buy your product, somebody who will pick you up when you're down, that is a lot more valuable than any amount of dollars. I know if I had a genie poof up here right now and offer me either, I would take the 10 million people all day, man. You can't cash that out at a bank, but it's way more valuable. And in a world where everybody is connected by the internet, as many people have the internet as have access to clean drinking water, I can take my phone out of my pocket. I can share a thought or a feeling and it might resonate with and move. This is not an exaggeration, billions of people. So the most valuable thing to be doing right now is telling stories, is creating culture. Sure, sharing resources and helping people find them, but also documenting it, also building community and relationships around it and making those intangible things real by the artifacts you produce in the world, by the products you nurture. Sure, they might sell a billion dollars of widgets, incubated and accelerated by Super Team USA, that I might not see a monetary return on. But buddy, if you want a story like that in the future, you know that one of the only places you can get it is from Super Team USA. And if you want my ideas, you gotta come to me. That is the value of the future. Memes, ideas, resonant emotions. And saying we don't want equity is saying we're all in. This is your idea. We want to be part of the story that you tell about it because Amy says this all the time. It's not the best product that wins. Not the best idea. It's the best story. So all in on founders. We want you. We don't want equity. The founders of tomorrow are building with Super Team USA. tell your story with us.
