Remember when I talked about Vitalik's big philosophical post, the one where he said that Ethereum needs a big shift in direction? Well, he just followed that up with something much more concrete, an actual multi-year technical roadmap for basically every major piece of Ethereum's protocol. And this is not a small update, he's calling it Ethereum's third major error, the same tier as the merge. You know, when Ethereum switched to proof of stake? So it's big and we need to talk about it. Hi, I'm Linda and if you'd like to see more content like this, make sure to give me a follow and remember that this is not financial advice. Always do your own research. Okay, so this weekend Vitalik made a post on X talking about the Lean Ethereum straw map. That straw map is basically a rough first draft roadmap and he called it the third major iteration of Ethereum just as Merge was the second, and it's not just one upgrade. It will be a collection of upgrades that is going to roll out over the next three to four years and it will touch nearly every layer of Ethereum. He's very explicit here that almost every major piece of the protocol is getting replaced and this whole concept has been in the works for a hot minute now. He named three top priorities, quantum resistance, scalability, and privacy. So let's start with quantum safety first. They want to replace anything that's quantum vulnerable with quantum safe alternatives. And Vitalik was pretty blunt about this one. He said, and I'm using his actual words here, that quantum safety has shifted up a lot in priority and that finalizing a quantum safe solution for blobs has become urgent. He also said that this work has actually already been going on for months behind the scenes, because right now a lot of the cryptography that secures crypto wallets and transactions relies on math problems that is impossible to solve for normal computers. Quantum computers on the other hand, if and when they get powerful enough could potentially break that math. Now, nobody really thinks that this is going happen any time soon. But basically every blockchain is starting to prepare for this in one way or another. And I mean it's not just blockchains anymore, it's virtually everyone at the moment. Because the fear is obviously there and if they don't start now, they might be too late. The next upgrade serves both scalability and quantum safety. And I'm going to skip the how they do it entirely here, but if you want to learn more about the tech under the hood and how Ethereum works, I've left a link in the description down below. But essentially what this upgrade does is they want to change the verification from direct re-execution to recursive starks. That means cheaper and lighter verification that lets the network handle more without the fees creeping up. So essentially for you, you'll get cheaper gas fees and a faster, more responsive chain, even if more people are using it. They also want to work on consensus and move to one or two round finality. Theoretically, has Vitalik said with optimal security properties and faster than today. Now, the next piece is what Vitalik called the single most disruptive part of this entire plan. And that's adding new types of state that are more scalability friendly. So essentially builders won't need to sync or store all of the data. So Ethereum currently runs on an account based model. And that isn't going away. It will stay for the more complex things. But Vitalik wants to introduce a second new type of state alongside it. That is built for simpler everyday stuff like ERC-20 tokens, NFTs, and a lot of DeFi use cases and tokens. One of the leading ideas is for this to actually make it a UTXO style, the same model as Bitcoin and Kidano. But exactly which design they land on is still being figured out and he explicitly asked the community and builders to give him feedback on this. Now he's also talking about multi-dimensional gas, so let's quickly touch on that as well. Today, basically everything you do on Ethereum gets priced through one gas mechanism. But with multidimensional gas, you would basically get more consistent and faro gas fees. So let's say a bunch of people flood the network with something that is very storage heavy. Then your unrelated simple transaction wouldn't get dragged into that same fee spike. So fees would become more accurately tied to what your specific transaction is actually using. And I think that's pretty cool. But all right, let's get back to the third pillar. And that's programmable privacy. Because everything is about privacy these days. Vitalik said it's no longer an afterthought. It is a first class goal. And rightfully so, because with how crypto is going, if you want to succeed, you need privacy built in. Vitalik ended his post with a line that I think says a lot. He said Ethereum is CROPS, Ethereum is scaling, Ethereum is reinventing itself. Onward. Nice. Now, all of this is a pretty major overhaul, but I think three to four years is maybe a little too long to ship this.
