I moved into the townhouse three months ago. Cheap rent, thin walls, carpet that still smells like someone else’s detergent no matter how many times I steam it. Roommate’s name is Elise. Mid-twenties, works from home on invoices, smiles when you talk and then looks like she already forgot you exist. We barely overlapped at first. She went to bed early. I stayed up late.
The first time I heard her on the stairs it was 2:17 a.m. Third step from the bottom creaked and then nothing. No second creak. No fridge. No sink. I waited four minutes and went down in socks. Living room dark, hallway dark. Only light was a candle on the little table under the big hallway mirror. Elise stood in front of it in a white tank top and sleep shorts, both hands around the candle like she was warming them. Not brushing her hair. Not checking her face. Just looking. I said her name once, quiet. She didn’t jump. Turned her head a little like she’d known I was there the whole time and said, “Sorry. Couldn’t sleep.” Then she blew the candle out and went upstairs without looking at me again.
It happened again two nights later. Same time, almost exactly. I didn’t go down. Just sat on the edge of my bed and listened. Step creaked. Silence. Candle set down. Glass on wood. Then nothing for a long time. The third time I filmed it from the top of the stairs with my phone screen off. You can hear me breathing too loud. Candle light moving on the ceiling. She stands there for eleven minutes without shifting her weight. At 2:31 she turns her head toward the stairs like she can see me in the dark and the video ends because I almost dropped the phone.
I asked her about it the next afternoon. Tried to sound casual. “Do you sleepwalk?” She was making coffee. Looked at me for a second too long and said, “No. I just like the quiet.” Same small smile she always uses when she wants the conversation to be over.
Around the same time my girlfriend of almost two years started acting off. She’d always been a little quiet and private, but it changed. She’d wake up in the middle of the night and just sit on the edge of the bed staring at the wall for hours. When I’d ask what she was doing she’d say she couldn’t remember getting up. Then the sleepwalking started. Or at least that’s what I thought it was.
A few weeks ago I woke up around 3:10 a.m. at her place and she wasn’t in bed. Bathroom empty. Kitchen empty. Soft scraping outside. I looked out the bedroom window and froze. She was standing on the roof. Barefoot. Just a t-shirt. Completely still, facing away from the house toward the trees. I called her name through the window. No reaction. I had to go outside, climb up, and physically pull her back in. When I got her inside she looked at me like she had no idea where she was. Kept asking why her feet were dirty.
It happened two more times after that. Same time of night. Same blank expression. Last time I found her standing at the very edge of the roof, toes hanging off. When I grabbed her arm she was ice cold. She talks in her sleep now, but it’s not normal. Low, almost whispered voice that doesn’t sound like hers. Pieces like “they’re waiting” and “I can’t hold it much longer.” In the morning she gets quiet and changes the subject. She’s been disappearing during the day too. Says she went for a walk, comes back with leaves in her hair or mud on her clothes even when it hasn’t rained. Once she came back with a small cut on her forearm she claimed she didn’t notice. Sometimes when she thinks I’m not watching she gets this look. Like she’s studying me. Like she’s waiting for something.
I started locking my bedroom door at the townhouse. Last Tuesday I woke up at 3:04 and the door was open. I never leave it open. I checked twice before I went to sleep. I remember the click. Elise was sitting in the chair in the corner of my room. Not on the bed. Not standing over me. Just sitting with her hands in her lap, looking at me. Candle on my nightstand, already lit. Flame very still. I sat up so fast I hit my head on the shelf. She didn’t apologize. Didn’t explain. She said, “You talk in your sleep.” I asked her to get out. Voice came out wrong. She stood up, picked up the candle, and walked out. At the doorway she stopped and said, “You said my name. That’s why I came in.”
I didn’t say her name. I don’t talk in my sleep. I’ve recorded myself before because an ex used to claim I did. Nothing.
I changed the lock the next day. Cheap interior lock from the hardware store. She watched me install it from the kitchen and didn’t say anything. Two nights later the lock was still locked when I woke up. Chair empty. Candle on my nightstand again. Lit. And there was a second one on the floor at the foot of the bed, also lit, like someone had set it down carefully so it wouldn’t tip. On the mirror downstairs now there are fingerprints in the dust at mouth height. Not smudges from cleaning. Little oval marks, like someone pressed their lips there and held still.
I started sleeping with my phone under the pillow and a kitchen knife on the nightstand because I am an idiot who still pays rent here instead of leaving. My girlfriend came over last week. She stood in the hallway for a long time looking at the mirror. Didn’t say anything. Just stood there with her head tilted like she was listening to something I couldn’t hear. When I asked if she was okay she smiled the same small smile Elise uses. Said she was fine. That night she slept at her own place. I stayed awake on purpose at the townhouse.
At 2:16 the stair creaked. I waited until 2:40 and went down without turning any lights on. Elise was in front of the mirror again. Candle in both hands. Forehead almost touching the glass. Whispering. I couldn’t make out words at first. Then I could. She was repeating my girlfriend’s name. Over and over. Same flat tone. Not calling her. Just saying it. I took one step back and the floorboard gave me away. She didn’t turn around. Still facing the glass she said, “Don’t come closer. It doesn’t like when there are two.” I asked her what “it” was. She finally looked at my reflection instead of her own. “It’s not me in the mornings,” she said. “You already know that. You just don’t want to say it out loud.” Then she blew the candle out and the hallway went black.
I drove to my girlfriend’s place. Didn’t call first. Her bedroom window was open. I could see the roof from the driveway. She was standing there again. Barefoot. Facing the trees. But this time there was a candle in her hands. I don’t know where she got it. She was whispering something. Same flat tone Elise uses. I climbed up. She didn’t turn when I said her name. When I got close enough to touch her she was ice cold and she still didn’t blink. Not once. I pulled her back inside. She looked at me for a second and said, in that same low voice that isn’t hers, “You talk in your sleep. That’s why we both came.” Then she smiled. The small one. And asked me why her feet were dirty.
I am writing this from my car in the grocery store parking lot because I am not going back in there until it’s light. Her bedroom door was closed when I left the townhouse earlier. I could hear her moving around in there. Slow. Like she was placing things. Elise’s door was closed too when I checked on the way out. Same slow moving. I don’t think either of them has blinked at me in a week. The knife is still on my nightstand. The locks don’t matter. The candles keep showing up lit. And every time I close my eyes for more than a few minutes I hear the third step creak and the roof scrape at the same time.
If anyone lives with a quiet roommate who “can’t sleep” and likes candles, or a girlfriend who stands on the roof and comes back with mud in her hair, check whether they still blink when they think you’re not looking. Check the mirror. Check the roof. Check if they’re saying each other’s names when they think you’re asleep. I don’t think they’re the same person. I don’t think either of them is who they used to be. And I don’t think I’m the only one in the house who is being watched anymore."
