In theory, the market cap weighted global portfolio is optimal. However, investors face expropriation risk and FX valuation risk. I know that people on r/Bogleheads have often argued that currencies are usually mean reverting, (and therefore FX risk doesn't really exist in the long run) but that has been the case for most major currencies in recent decades (USD, CAD, EUR, GBP, JPY, etc). That does not mean that this trend has to continue. There is no magic financial law that says DXY or JPY has to go sideways indefinetely. It's entirely plausible for a US investor to begin their investment life with the DXY at 120, and then end their investment career at 60. Over 1-5 decades, that's a 1.5-7% annual tailwind on returns for the US investor's international allocation. On the flip side, if DXY went from 60 to 120, that would be a headwind of -1.5-7% annually for the international holdings. It is common to see different advice given to people from differerent countries, which doesn't make sense to me. People say "if you're US based, just do VT because VT is 62% US anyways." The problem with this line of thinking is that this reality can and will change. The US won't perpetually be 62% forever. It may drift higher, or may drift lower. Imagine if the US becomes 20% of the global cap. Should US investors still just buy VT only? What about if VT became 85% US? Isn't that way too much domestic concentration in a portfolio? I think that we need a universal fix for this - some kind of combination of funds that works for any investor globally trying navigate these issues."
