I’m 25 and genuinely struggling with what direction I want to take my career, so I’d love some outside perspective.
Right now I’m a public adjuster. I work from home, have no set hours, have a lot of flexibility, and make a base income of about $48,000 CAD/year plus commission with essentially no ceiling on what I could earn.
On paper, there are a lot of benefits.
The problem is… I hate my job.
I’m not passionate about insurance and never really envisioned myself building a career in this industry. I also don’t always feel respected by my boss, and I work with my mom, which comes with its own mix of pros and cons.
So I feel like I’m at a crossroads.
Option 1: Stay where I am, appreciate the flexibility and earning potential, put a smile on my face and treat work as something that funds the life I actually care about.
Option 2: Go back to school and pursue something I think I would enjoy more. I’ve been seriously interested in firefighting. I think I would find the work much more meaningful and fulfilling, but obviously that comes with shift work, more time away from my family, a more defined income ceiling, and giving up some of the flexibility I have now.
Option 3: Stay in my current career for now, continue making money and building financial stability, and eventually work toward starting my own business. My real passion is health, fitness and wellness, and I keep coming back to the idea of creating some sort of women-focused fitness/wellness club or community.
Part of me feels like I’m only 25 and this is exactly the time to change careers if I’m unhappy.
Another part of me thinks I have a very flexible job with potentially great income and I’d be crazy to walk away from that — especially when flexibility with a family is so valuable.
And then another part of me wonders if my job doesn’t actually need to be my passion. Maybe I should use the career I have to finance the business and life I actually want.
If you were in my position, what would you do?
Especially interested in hearing from anyone who:
• changed careers in their 20s
• works as a firefighter
• stayed in a well-paying career they didn’t love
• or left a career to eventually build their own business
I feel like I’m choosing between stability, fulfillment and entrepreneurship, and I’m having a really hard time figuring out which one I’ll regret NOT pursuing."
