The second time, he knew something was wrong.
By the third, he had started keeping a list—not of the miracles themselves, but of what each one had taken from him.
Danny had never been a lucky kid. When he was young, his family had lived from one week to the next, constantly balancing on the thin edge between having enough and having nothing at all. Their apartment was small, cramped, and always seemed to smell faintly of damp wood and old food. The kitchen table was covered in scratches and shallow grooves left behind by years of use, and the drawers rarely contained more than a few bent forks and dull knives. Some nights, there was dinner. Other nights, there was whatever his parents could find.
The eviction notices were the worst.
They would appear beneath the apartment door like unwanted invitations, their bright white paper standing out against the dirty carpet. His father would snatch them up before Danny could read them, folding them into tiny squares and stuffing them into his pockets as if making them smaller could somehow make the problem disappear.
Danny learned early not to ask where their next meal was coming from.
He learned not to complain when his shoes developed holes.
He learned that when his father stared silently at the kitchen table for too long, it was better to leave him alone.
For fifteen years, that was simply what life was.
Until one evening, everything changed.
Danny was sitting in the living room when the front door suddenly burst open hard enough to rattle the frame. His father stumbled inside, practically skipping with every step. His cheeks were flushed, and there was a strange brightness in his eyes that Danny had never seen before.
“Danny!”
His father crossed the room in an instant and grabbed his son by the shoulders.
“There’s nothing to worry about anymore, son.”
Danny blinked.
His father was smiling.
Not the small, tired smile he sometimes gave Danny when he came home from work. This was different. It was enormous, almost unnatural, stretching so far across his face that Danny briefly wondered if his cheeks might split.
“What do you mean?” Danny muttered.
His father laughed under his breath, shaking his head as though he could hardly believe what he was about to say.
“I’ve worked out a deal, son.”
“A deal?”
“There’ll always be food on your plate. Clean clothes in your dresser.” He paused, glancing toward the battered wooden dresser in the corner. “Hell, even a new dresser. We can get rid of that shitty little thing.”
Danny looked at the dresser. One of its drawers had been broken for years, and the top was scarred with countless scratches.
His father continued.
“And a brand-new house. A bigger one. Somewhere with space. A real kitchen. A real bedroom for you.”
Danny stared at him.
For a moment, he couldn't speak.
A new house.
Food whenever he wanted.
Clean clothes.
No more eviction notices.
No more listening to his parents whisper late at night about bills they couldn't pay.
It sounded impossible.
It sounded like a miracle.
His father's grin widened.
Danny smiled back.
Then he threw his arms around his father and hugged him so tightly that he could feel the steady thumping of his father's heart against his chest. For a few precious seconds, the two of them simply stood there, holding onto each other as though neither wanted to let go.
When they finally separated, Danny looked up at his father with shining eyes.
“Mom will be very proud of you, Dad.”
The smile disappeared.
Not all at once.
It slowly drained from his father's face until there was nothing left but a deep, hollow frown.
The room seemed to change with him.
The warmth disappeared.
The air suddenly felt cold and strangely sticky against Danny's skin. Neither of them spoke. The silence grew so thick that Danny could hear things he had never noticed before: the muffled television playing in the apartment upstairs, the frantic scratching of roaches somewhere inside the walls, the faint whistle of wind squeezing through the cracks around the windows.
His father stared at the floor.
Then, finally, he spoke.
“Your mother won’t be living with us anymore, Danny.”
The words came out slowly.
His father swallowed.
“Not anymore.”
Danny stared at him.
He noticed something then.
His father's hands were shaking.
And on his left hand, where there had always been a small silver ring, there was nothing.
Danny's eyes locked onto the empty ring finger.
The finger that had carried his father's promise to his mother.
The finger that had always been there.
Until now.
Danny's stomach twisted.
“No.”
His voice was barely a whisper.
He turned and ran.
He tore through the tiny apartment, throwing open doors and yanking back curtains as though his mother might somehow be hiding behind them. He rushed into the kitchen, then the bathroom, then his parents' bedroom.
“Mom?”
Nothing.
He checked the closet.
Empty.
The bedroom.
Empty.
The living room.
Empty.
He ran back toward the front door and stopped, his chest heaving.
There was nowhere else to look.
The apartment was only eight hundred square feet, but for the first time in Danny's life, it felt enormous.
Endless.
Hollow.
Danny stood in the middle of the apartment, tears spilling down his cheeks.
Behind him, his father remained silent.
And somewhere inside the walls, the roaches continued to scurry."
