Since I work IT, AI is a potential threat to my job and maybe even career in the next couple of years (as a side note, I don’t think it’s as powerful as some think, but it only matters what “the bosses” think). I have been thinking about lowering the 401(k) contribution to just the match and maybe a little more and investing the rest in taxable. I know it’s not efficient, but the flexibility to cover a sabbatical or retraining or just a long job search just feels better to me emotionally. The question is, am I thinking about this wrongly and should I keep just loading up the retirement accounts and potentially utilizing them in the short (or medium) term if need be?

So I’ve finally accepted I’m an emotional trader, not in the revenge trading sense but whenever it comes to paper trading I’m almost always opening the right positions, closing at the times that give me the most profit, following everything I’ve learnt yk making good trades. But the second I start trading with actual money I get so “emotional” like I don’t want to lose a penny, like the second I open the trade I wanna close it as soon as its not at a loss just so I don’t lose any money and it’ll always be I close early and take a small loss or leave potential profits on the table if I trusted myself.

I used to save up for this contribution in my CMA account in money market shares, but this year, I parked the money for this contribution in an taxable brokerage account. My plan was to sell shares in the brokerage account in late December so that I could transfer the cash to my Roth IRA in January. My understanding is cash/money market transfer is the only way to contribute to a Roth IRA. After that you can buy other positions with the cash. The brokerage account and the Roth IRA account have the same positions, and I use the same Basket Portfolio configuration for each one.
