I’m getting out of the military (switching to the reserves to keep language pay and health insurance) and trying to figure out what to get into civilian side. Thanks to the military I have the GI Bill and a Top Secret clearance. I (stupidly) got my computer science degree (Through Arizona State) while in just to find that no one is hiring programmers anymore haha. I applied and got into a master’s degree in intelligence and with my GI bill it’ll be 100% free. I also have been offered a on-campus job that will help cover my living expenses too. But I’ve had NCOs warn me that master’s degrees are not worth it anymore in this economy and I should just get a job. I also applied to be a 911 dispatcher in my hometown as a backup plan but the pay isn’t great so I’m unsure if that would be better than just doing a master’s degree. My last option is pivoting away from university and instead trying to become a technician of some sort through community college. This appeals to me since I’d like to have an actual skill rather than nebulous certifications. I also an blessed to have 60,000 dollars saved up in a high yield savings account. My final plan is to just become a cop, but I’m a small not so intimidating intel nerd and I’m worried I’d suck at that. Please help me. I’m a former foster kid with no mentors to really ask these things from.
