Interior designers….seriously, how are people putting together design portfolios these days?
I’ve been at the same company for a long time working on interior design projects, and now that I’m finally thinking about looking for a new job, I realized I have NO idea what the current portfolio expectations are anymore. What format/tools are people using nowadays? InDesign? Canva? Website? PDF? I have tons of experience putting together design presentations for clients, but somehow presenting myself and my own work feels 10x harder. I swear we judge our own work way harder than our clients do.

We were just told that our division is going out of business and to immediately stop doing any work. Our book of business is being purchased by a competitor, but they are not automatically purchasing our employees as part of the deal. In fact they’re not even automatically getting the book of business, our clients still have the option of going elsewhere, but the acquiring company would be the most seamless option and presumably most clients will choose to go to them. We’ve been told that the acquiring company is interested in hiring some of our staff, but we have no information on how many people or when they will be hiring us. In the meantime my current company is keeping us onboard essentially just to oversee the sunsetting of our division, but they definitely do not need all of us to do this. So far we have no timeframe of when we will be laid off by our current company, only that it is definitely happening. They implied we may have our jobs for up to a year or even more, but I do not see how that would make any sense, given that we’ve been told to stop doing any work."
