I’m a Russian citizen currently living in Hungary, and Revolut recently asked me to provide information about four people who have sent me EUR/HUF.
The situation is a bit unusual, so I’d appreciate advice from anyone who has dealt with something similar.
I occasionally exchanged currency privately with people I personally know. Some of them needed RUB in Russia, while I needed EUR/HUF in Hungary.
The arrangement was:
I transferred RUB from my own Russian bank account to their Russian bank account.
They transferred the agreed EUR/HUF equivalent from their European bank account to my European account.
These were private arrangements between people I know.
I did not advertise this as a service or charge a commission.
There have been more than four people involved over the years, but Revolut specifically asks me about these four, presumably because they were the most frequent counterparties.
Revolut is asking me to provide:
- The reason for the payments and my relationship with each person.
- Information about all my sources of income.
- Statements from all my external bank accounts for the last three months.
My main concern is how to describe the transactions truthfully without creating unnecessary problems.
Should I simply explain that these were private currency exchanges between acquaintances and provide the relevant bank statements showing the RUB transfers on the Russian side?
I’m also wondering whether private currency exchanges between individuals can raise any regulatory issues in Hungary, even when there is no commission and the people involved know each other.
Has anyone in Hungary/EU, particularly Russian citizens, had a similar Revolut KYC review? If so, what was the outcome and what kind of documentation did Revolut accept?
I’m not looking for ways to hide or misrepresent the transactions — I’m trying to understand how to explain them correctly and what to expect.
Any KYC financial lawyers?"
