Hope this helps people. Like with many things, spot is driven by algorithmic trading. Two of the largest inputs are treasury yields and USD. When people sell Treasury, yields go up. The conventional theory is that gold then goes down because treasury yields now become more attractive and people will sell gold for it because gold is non yield bearing. But of course, that can't be the whole truth because if yields keep going up, that means people are selling not buying treasury. Usually what actually happens is people sell Treasury to move into USD. This signals to forex traders that there is demand for USD and they will drive USD up. This then causes Gold to drop for two reasons. One is that Gold is now more costly for non-US customers because gold prices are usually denoted in USD. Two is that algos will sell Gold to get USD simply because they expect USD to keep going up. Of course, this has very little to do with long term trends for Gold because it is essentially arbitrage. Now if the reverse were to happen, USD would go down, signalling a move away from cash. Then the situation can get quite complex, because you can have a situation where people will sell Treasury so yields would go up but if they were to move in gold then that's the overall dedollarization (de-usfication) trade.
