Recently I saw a semiconductor buying an unproven startup AI lab with high stock price. It sounds like a good move, right? No! First of all, the company doesn’t have the balance to buy up the startup and then it is unproven, only formally exists very short time. If anything goes wrong, it is a big problem for the company and investors are left to hold the bag too. Secondly, it reduces earning per shares. Thirdly, when a company’s balance sheet over extended, chickens will come home to roost when time is bad. This reminds me of Nortel at dot-com era."
