Not ruined in the sense that the people on it give out atrocious investment advice (which they usually do) but ruined because it forced huge segments of the world into a permanent state of dopamine addiction. Being bored for 10 minutes is so unbearable for most people they will do anything to get dopamine. Dopamine addiction can be hard to understand but I’ll try to keep it as simple as possible. Heroin is addictive because of what the chemical does to your body. Cocaine is addictive because of the way your body reacts to the chemical. I know those logically seem like the same thing but they’re different for one core reason. If you’re addicted to heroin nothing but heroin will curb your addiction, if you’re addicted to cocaine, anything that produces the same response in your body as cocaine (a release of dopamine) will curb the addiction. So essentially what we call a cocaine addiction is actually a dopamine addiction because that’s what your body is getting out of it. You know what else releases dopamine? Fear, day trading, gambling, arguments, a ton of other things too like flashing lights and bright colors like you’d get from a screen, this makes fear that comes from a screen particularly potent. This in my opinion is why fear keeps coming back relentlessly in the market no matter how many times it’s wrong. People simply can’t stand just sitting around on a .5% green day and feel content anymore because there is very little if any dopamine in that. They have to have some sort of narrative or contradicting opinion, or short dated option to stress over, and that gives them dopamine. Even at the cost of capital. This is why people like Warren Buffett say that the market has become a casino. Not because it’s actually a casino where people can’t get an edge and are statistically guaranteed to lose but because people are no longer interested in looking for that edge. People invested based entirely off the dopamine they get from their decision. The biggest problem is that most people are addicted and don’t even have the slightest idea that there’s a problem. They violently lash out and argue back when the thing that gives them dopamine is challenged and then they get a dopamine reward when the person they are arguing with gives up."
