· 2026-09-25T22:06:51.790000+00:00How do constant acceleration trajectories work when transferring to a lower energy orbit? I'm playing in an Expanse tabletop game and as my character is the group's pilot and navigator, it got me thinking about how space travel works in the setting, when it comes to orbital mechanics. For the uninitiated, almost all spaceships in the Expanse have a torch drive and are almost never limited by a delta-v budget. Effectively all travel happens on constant acceleration trajectories, commonly 0.3 to 1g. The trajectories and burns needed are pretty straightforward for a simple Earth to Mars trip when Mars is ahead of Earth. But what about when transferring the other way, from a higher orbit to a lower one? Or between two similar orbits, such as asteroid stations in the Belt?
