It seems like the FIRE community is very open to renting (forever) but very opposed to leasing a new car every 3 years. Why? I don't buy the "throwing money away on rent" argument, and I don't buy it with leasing a car either. In both cases, you are getting value out of your money, a place to live and a nice car to drive. Now, I get the difference. In theory, if you rent versus own, your rent will typically be less, so you can use the difference to invest. But honestly in reality that really isn't the exact scenario pushing people to rent. They just would rather have a cheaper recurring expense, no maintenance, no headaches of home ownership. And in this sense, it's very similar to leasing a car. No maintenance, no headaches. Get a new car every 3 years, enjoy life. As long as your car lease is reasonable, I don't really see the difference between leasing a car and renting a house. Matter of fact, it's no difference than eating out, vacations, etc. All those things are "assets". You go on vacation, you enjoy it, that's it. Much like a car. You pay for it. You drive it, that's it. Am I missing something?"
