One thing I see beginners struggle with is this: clients want proof of experience, but how do you get proof when nobody has hired you yet? I don’t think a portfolio has to contain only paid client work. You can create sample projects like:

I work for a small startup company that has been having serious financial problems recently. My salary is 7 days overdue, and when I initially asked management about it at 4 days out, I was told I would receive an update later that day, but that update never came. We were told assets may need to be sold to cover employee pay and other debts. Some coworkers have even volunteered in the group chat to temporarily give up their salaries to help the business survive, which I have stayed completely out of. I’m still owed money for work I’ve already completed, and the DOL has now told me I can come in and formally file regarding the situation. Has anyone dealt with something similar? What would you make sure to document or do to protect yourself?"
