· 2026-09-24T16:32:22.061000+00:00Bonds vs. Bond Funds - Should they perform the same over a given period of time for the same maturity, bond type, and bond coupon/yield target I'm starting a thread on this topic because in another BH thread, a few users (including one top commenter) were indicating that buying bonds directly will have the same core performance as a bond fund, assuming you control for bond type, maturity timing, and bond coupon/yield target. I disagree with that take, in that buying bonds - at the time of purchase - have a precisely known nominal return. Their risk is in either the underlying bond not paying and in inflation. And you aren't liquid. Bond FUNDS do not share these same profiles. They never reach maturity - they constantly roll over - and their asset price fluctuates with demand, fear, interest rate fluctuations, and more. And you are liquid - which in this case creates those asset price risk considerations.

I am 34 currently and not married and no kids. I am not having children either. I currently own a home. Currently I’m just investing in my brokerage and have just been adding whatever is leftover from my weekly checks. I keep around 1 month bills in checking and have 6 months of expenses in an Ally HYSA. I was adding $100 a week to that just to have to pay for a car I may need in 3-5 years, but wasn’t sure if it’s just better for me to just add all extra weekly savings to the taxable brokerage instead.
